In an interview on Radio 1, police commissioner Ine Van Wymersch, a former prosecutor, has advocated decriminalizing the possession and use of illegal drugs, with the aim of a curative approach to drug users instead of repressive measures.

An assessment of Belgian drug policy has resulted in an information report approved by the Senate, which highlights the need to reform Belgian legislation on the subject.

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach hopes the Cannabis Act will be passed by the Bundestag in February and come into force in April, despite opposition to legalizing cannabis even within the governing coalition.
