October3, 2022 Sadiq Khan has pledged to push ahead with a commission on whether to legalise cannabis, despite Labour leader Keir Starmer being firmly against the move. On a trip to the US in May, the Mayor of London said an ‘honest conversation’ about the UK laws against cannabis needs to happen.
Mr Khan has confirmed that former justice secretary Lord Charlie Falconer KC will chair the first London Drugs Commission, which will assess the effectiveness of UK drug laws over the coming year. It won’t have the power to change the law, but backers believe it could shift the needle on the drug legalisation debate in the UK.
